Tools Storage Solutions against Freezing Garage Temperatures

When it comes to the cold weather, such as we are seeing now, how many of us give careful and proper consideration to the storage of our tools. Many of our tools, the power tools in particular, cost hundreds of pounds to purchase and some are designed to last for years. So how many of us look after them the way they should?

When the cold winter bites we take steps to protects items  in our homes, we turn up the central heating, ensure the pipes are properly lagged, we ensure the car is topped up with anti-freeze, but shouldn’t we be paying a little more attention to the expensive tools we have in the garage?

Omitting to care for our tools correctly could be a very expensive mistake. So let me share with you some winter tips for caring for your power tools properly.

Hand Tool Storage

Storing our power tools correctly and safely in the garage will help protect them from freezing conditions. Tools exposed to freezing conditions could make then brittle and susceptible to damage. If you have cause to use them during such cold periods you would be advised to bring them into the house for an hour or so before use and let them sit in room temperature.

Many of the largest problems stemming from regarding power tool storage in winter arise from plugging in cold tools and starting them before they have had the chance to warm up. This causes a big, rapid temperature swing from very cold to very hot which is a stress that can result in the sudden failure and damage to the equipment
Huge variations in temperature could also aid the rusting process so careful storage in the garage is vital. Make sure they are dry and kept off the ground and you may want to consider a rust protector to really help protect them against possible rust.

Reducing humidity in the garage or shed would also be of benefit so if you have some really valuable tools you may want to consider purchasing a de-humidifier.

Power Tool Storage

Power tools that contain a lubricant grease or oil should be allowed to warm up before you use them. Many such tools, particularly pneumatic tools are not as effective when they run cold. Many such tools come with manufactures recommendations for which oil/lubricant to use for best use with the tools and I would strongly advise giving this some careful thought when storing and re-using the tools for the first time after storage.

Cordless Power Tool Storage

Some common sense is needed here. Freezing temperatures will undoubtedly accelerate the discharge of battery cells and in extreme cold temperatures many chargers simply do not work. I would always recommend that tools with power cords and battery chargers should be stored inside the home if possible and if not, store the tools off the ground and secure in the garage while storing the battery and charger in the home.

Heating the Garage

Depending on the value and use of the tools you have it may be worth considering some form of garage heating. It makes common sense to protect your investment and keeping the garage above freezing temperature may save a lot of heartache and frustration as well as money.

Garage Tools Storage Kits

Storing the tools properly is vital and the garage tools storage kits from StorageMaker helps store your tools carefully and securely whilst keeping them safe and clean. A small investment now could save you a fortune in the future
